Just like so many of you, I know what it’s like to run on all cylinders.
I spent the last 20 years juggling the demands of medical school and surgical training, building a facial plastic surgery practice and becoming a partner in one of the largest health care practices in the country. I navigated the delicate balance of starting a family, going out on maternity leave, then returning to a full work schedule while balancing nursing, children’s school work and child care as a busy working mom.
As a surgeon, I guide patients’ surgical transformations and well-being; but oftentimes, I lack the time and energy to devote to my own self-care. The concept of AIREM came together after the birth of my third child.
It was my third c-section in just 4 years.
My mother wisely prompted me to focus on my postpartum recovery and recommended a ‘sanujori.’ In South Korea, where I was born, there is a time-revered system of care and recovery after birth where you are taken under the wing of a postpartum caretaker for a few weeks. These aides are typically experienced and having been through the birthing process themselves, they know the toll it takes on your body. They are there to guide and heal you back to health while sharing in their generations of collective wisdom in motherhood and self-care.
While I hadn’t experienced this process with my first two kids, I realized that I needed to pause and recharge – even if for a moment. I devoted my first postpartum week to restoring my gwallee, or self-care, while spending one-on-one time with my newborn. A recovery ritual of herbal hand and foot soaks, deep massages, healthy eating, renewing teas, postpartum skin care, rejuvenating sleep and mindful moments of meditation deeply restored and nurtured my spirit. The sanujori experience helped me to appreciate the importance of self-care.
How can I be my best at taking care of others if I don’t prioritize taking care of myself?
I was inspired to connect this deeper experience of gwallee to my practice in aesthetic surgery, and create moments of rejuvenation for everyone to experience. Built on the very principles that renewed my well-being, AIREM strives to nurture the spirit and empower confidence by helping you to maintain a self-care regimen that enhances the best of who you are. From our curated treatments and skin care products to the AIREM exclusive retreat, I personally invite you to share in collective beauty through timeless rituals.
